Overview
- Known for its strong start-up culture, Berlin has developed into a key life sciences location.
- Industry companies have established life sciences parks serving as incubators and catalysts in Berlin in recent years. However, Berlin’s life sciences sector also encompasses the entire city beyond these parks.
- Berlin has a strong scientific culture of universities (TU Berlin, University of Potsdam, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin) and affiliated institutions. Between 2010–2021, the number of publications in the top 1% of their field (biomedicine, health, geosciences and life sciences) increased by 125%, surpassing U.S. and U.K. growth rates during the same period.
- The region sustains a strong cluster in biotech, pharmaceuticals and medical technology due to its robust research, hospital infrastructure and business-friendly policies.
- In 2023 and 2024, Berlin secured 10% of Germany’s life sciences venture capital funding, a drop from an 18% share between 2020-2022, but still higher than the meager 2% share in 2019.
